Has anyone seen this before? Can any "old-school" Altec guys tell if this was a custom job and NOT produced by Altec as a catalouged item? If a custom job then it obviously don't even have a model number I'd guess. My brother is seriously planning on building a set of these in the future once he gets all the correct componets. The woofs look like 416-8b (0r a & c). The horns look like 511b. HF drivers a complete mystery. Looks in the pic like one HF unit is mounted without a horn(!). The crossover is likely a custom job as well.
My brother ask me to post this question to see if anyone is familiar with this "Rod Speaker". Wonder where it is today. (yes! he is searching for it believe it or not!

I've seen and hear model 9845. It looks like a modified version with 2 416-A.With the horn on top
.It would require a separation inside between the 2 416. Great Idea. The 9845 were the best studio monitor Altec produced.

Sure looks like another "mystery tweeter" next to that 511.

It's my understanding that it's a custom and that the Onken W is basically a clone with 416-8B minus the horn, super tweeter. WRT the latter, my SWAG is it's an 802 on a chamfered mounting plate either capped off around 20 kHz or 2nd order around 10 kHz. This became a 'fad' with some back around this time to extend the Altec, JBL, etc., horns to compete with the HIFI crowd's increasing preoccupation with 'airy'/'transparent' highs.

Why? I mean as long as the driver's specs aren't too far out there's no need, though the divider does act as a brace. Anyway, my large dual 515 cabs aren't divided and neither were the dual Altec HIFI or horn cabs or the Onken W and I've yet to hear/read of any related complaints.
That said, for prosound apps it's a good idea due to the much higher SPLs/excursion demands and need to sometimes replace drivers 'on the fly' and if not ~matched, then the one drawing the most current will 'hog' the power, causing a rapid demise due to the increasing lower tuning as the other driver is increasingly relegated to being a passive radiator.

GM is correct- the divided chambers is mostly a pro sound practice- if he didn't mention, that way a blown driver can simply be disconnected, at a slight loss in volume of course.
These needs generally don't apply at home.

You'r probably right. I based my abalysis on Augpurger Monitors which has chambers inside.
I don't see any duct ports on this one.
I'm no cabinet designer but how would you determine
the volume for 2 416-B ?.

There should be a M19-like vertical slot on each side between the driver and outside wall if what I was told is correct, but I don't see them in the ad. You know, I never gave it any thought, but after looking at the Onken W again it appears to have ~the same net Vb, tuning as two M19s.
FWIW, here's a build-up of one in French: http://www.melaudia.net/remOnken.php
Many box programs allow you to choose the number of drivers, but if yours doesn't, then to maintain the alignment, just multiply the calc'd Vb and number of vents by the number of drivers or you can calc a larger single vent based on the new Vb and desired Fb.

The program that I'm using is for single driver. Do you have any web site that I could use for multiple drivers ?
Thanks and kind regards.

Oops sorry Gm. I have it for multiple drivers.
It's all metric. The Altec parameters are imperial.
For the 416 B the system tells me that my figures
for QTS and another are wrong.
